What is the John F. Barnes Myofascial Release Approach?

Myofascial Release is a highly effective, whole-body, hands-on approach for evaluation and treatment of an individual. The therapist uses sustained pressure into fascial restrictions which eliminates pain and restore motion in the body again. Because every body has a different story, each session is unique to the individual.

What is Fascia?

Fascia is some pretty cool stuff. It is only until recently that science is changing how it is looking at what was once thought of as just the 'packing material' of the body. However, now there is so much science that states otherwise. Here is some fascinating essentials on fascia:
  • Fascia or what is called connective tissue is three-dimensional. This material is a web that goes from head to toe. So when clients come in and states “I know everything is connected”, it is through the fascial web that makes everything in your body connected. However, also expand your mind to think not only is it from head to toe, but goes from your skin all the way down to the cellular level! This is why as a therapist we can work on your toe and affect your neck.
  • Trauma, postural patterns or how we use our body everyday, repetitive stress injuries and inflammation can create a binding down or a gluing affect of the fascia. Yet, there is more! This fascial system can put excessive pressure on nerves, blood vessels, osseous structures and/or your organs AND fascia does not show up on standard tests such as x-rays, myelograms, CAT scans, electromyography, etc!
  • It doesn't stop there: This all-pervasive fascia material in the body can produce tensile pressures of approximately 2,000 pounds per square inch into your body. When fascia is healthy it maintains its shape and keeps all of the body's functions intact which allows the body to resist mechanical stresses both inside and outside the body. However, If an injury or prolonged imposition remains unresolved, your fascia will reorganize and tighten which forms new strain patterns in the body. This tightness, over time spreads like a pull in a sweater which will in turn cause a reorganization of fibers and twists their shape.

The John F. Barnes Myofascial Release Approach has 3 components that are the foundation of this whole-body work:

Structural Myofascial Release

Structural Myofascial Release involves applying gentle, sustained pressure into areas of tightness, restriction, or pain and waiting for your body to release. Never forceful, these pressures are applied to gently reach the barrier of the tissue restriction. The only way to experience a lasting change in the tissue is to wait. Additional time spent holding the pressure (beyond 3-5 minutes for each restriction!) enables your connective tissue to fully “melt” and lengthen. Science is telling us that there is yet another benefit to waiting long enough to allow for a phase change in the tissue. Beyond 5 minutes, your body will begin producing interleukin, which is a natural anti-inflammatory!

Myofascial Unwinding

This is the natural movement facilitation of this approach. By giving yourself the permission to let go and let your body unwind where is has been held tight and taunt for so long, your body is able to let go of this long-term sub-conscious holding pattern it has held onto. This is the natural state of us. If you look at how you move about during your sleep you would probably agree.

Myofascial Rebounding

This is the rocking or oscillating movement that utilizes the 70% of our bodies composed of water to create waves of motion. These waves of motion begin to move into and throughout the body to erode at the long-term, subconscious holding patterns and allows for your body to move more freely.

It’s truly amazing the difference that Karla Quello has made in my body. I highly recommend you go see her and get on the road to living a happy, healthy, pain-free life!

As a 21 year old lady, I never realized how the tension and alinement of my body was truly affecting my life. I suffered from a knee injury from riding bmx for 9 years; I inherited endometriosis from my mum; I have high foot arches and a taste for high heeled shoes; and am a notorious stomach sleeper. In January 2014, I decided that this was going to be MY feel good year. I was going to focus on taking better care of myself and doing things that add riches to my life. I decided to start with how I felt in my body. I booked my first session with Karla and couldn’t wait to feel better than ever! My first session of MFR (Myofascial Release) was life changing. It wasn’t a typical massage; where the therapist oils your skin and finds some of your aches and knots. This was something much more. It was healing for my soul. Energy revival. Before the session, Karla asked me to stand where my body felt comfortable. Where my hips naturally shifted and my arms fell to my sides. She looked at the positioning of my body and immediately had a plan for my body work. Instead of treating the symptoms of my problems, she focused on what was causing me discomfort in my body. After just 5 sessions, it is truly remarkable the difference I feel in my body. My posture has improved. My alignment is improved. My knee doesn’t get stiff and inhibit my mobility. Cramps during my menstruation are minimal to none. I also don’t wake up with back pain in my lower back. It’s truly amazing the difference that Karla Quello has made in my body. I highly recommend you go see her and get on the road to living a happy, healthy, pain-free life!
